EA Sports Active

Lauren Bernat, whom you might better remember as the Wii Fit Girl stumbled half-naked into her 15 seconds of internet fame when a video of her playing with the Wii Balance Board clad only in panties and a t-shirt was posted to YouTube

And now she's back, capitalizing on that "fame" for the benefit of the new EA Sports Active title, a new "virtual fitness" product for the Wii from Electronic Arts. In a new promotional video EA Canada PR Manager Jen Riley addresses a crowd while Bernat punches, jumps and squats her way through the game's workouts, all while struggling to keep a perky, "lovin' every minute of it" smile on her face.

EA Sports Active is set for release in May and while Riley said the company had no further announcements at this time, she did point out that along with being a game EA Sports Active is also a brand, strongly implying that future "virtual fitness" titles for the Wii would be revealed in the future.

Nintendo Wii release the Jog!

As seen at the CES Toy convention the Jog is to be released by Nintendo for use with the Nintendo Wii. This inovative device is a little like a pedometer, in that it detects your movements but it converts those movements into your characters movements in any game!
If you run, your character runs. If you stop running, your character stops running!
The Jog really takes Wii gaming to the next level. This device will encourage far more physical exercise from those who are trying to use the Wii to get fit than most of the games that come with the Wii Fit! Released in March here in the UK it's probably out everywhere else already because we are always last and always the most expensive!

Wal-Mart, Dell and eClinicalWorks to shake up healthcare

It looks like Wal-Mart are going to take to the field of electronic patient records.
The companies is teaming up it's Sam's Club division with Dell for the computers and eClinicalWorks for the

software. Wal-Mart says its package deal of hardware, software, installation, maintenance and training will make the

technology more accessible and affordable, undercutting rival health information technology suppliers by as much as

half.

“We’re a high-volume, low-cost company,” said Marcus Osborne, senior director for health care business development

at Wal-Mart. “And I would argue that mentality is sorely lacking in the health care industry.”

The Sam’s Club offering, to be made available this spring, will be under $25,000 for the first physician in a

practice, and about $10,000 for each additional doctor. After the installation and training, continuing annual costs

for maintenance and support will be $4,000 to $6,500 a year, the company estimates.

Barbie turns 50 this month

If you are a Barbie lover and you just happen to be in Shanghai then you really need to get over to Huai Hai road and check out the all new Barbie Experience. To commemorate her fifty years as an icon and collectors piece Mattel has opened the worlds first store dedicated to the ageless doll.
(Article published in full here: designTaxi )

To commemorate fifty years of Barbie dolls, toy manufacturer Mattel has opened the world’s first dedicated store to the icon on Huai Hai road in Shanghai, China, one of the busiest shopping streets in cosmopolitan downtown Shanghai.

The new store sits in an eight-storey building, occupying six floors, which approximately add up to 40,000sqft of floor space. This is where the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of Barbie dolls and the widest assortment of licensed Barbie products will be housed in addition to a range of services and activities for fans and their families.

Mattel's Richard Dickson, SVP and GM of the Barbie brand and the visionary behind the store, explains the concept: "We see the store as a destination, a place where girls of all ages come to spend the entire day and walk out feeling thoroughly enamored with the Barbie experience."

For Mattel, defining "the Barbie experience" was a journey to the core of the brand. For that to be a success, Shanghai proved to be the place for it with a confirmation from pre-launch focus groups by the manufacturer that proved its popularity with girls and mothers, all recognizing Barbie as a role model for the accomplished and confident female.

Dickson adds, "Our ability to inspire girls to be anything they dream–from a mermaid to a movie star, a fairy to a fashionista, a princess to a president–and the experiences we defined and created in the store are a direct connection to our brand's DNA, and unmatchable by any other brand in the world."

Not just having Barbie as the focus, Dickson also wanted a store that conveyed the brand as a global lifestyle. He recognized Barbie’s unique position as a fashion brand in the toy world, and with its strong historical link to fashion, expands on that heritage.

For this vision, he turned to BIG, the strategic branding and design division of Ogilvy & Mather, to help develop the creative concept.

"We were very excited to be asked early on by Richard Dickson to help bring his vision for a Barbie retail experience to life. From the beginning, our goal was to create an activity-driven brand experience grounded in Barbie's heritage as a fashion doll," says Richard Bates, BIG's Executive Creative Director.

New Talking iPod Shuffle

This beautiful new addition to the Apple range takes their design bent to the limit.

The minimalist approach is taken to the ultimate with the new iPod Shuffle ($79, 4GB of storage, in black or silver), announced March 11. I can’t think of a way to design a product any cleaner than this. The third-generation shuffle is about the size and shape of half a stick of chewing gum and not a whole lot thicker. As on the previous Shuffles, there is no display. But this time, Apple went further and eliminated the play and volume controls. The monolith-with-a-pocket-clip design is marred only by a tiny slider that serves as a power switch and a 3.5 mm hole for a headphone plug, which may have kept the unit from being even thinner; the Shuffle is just thick enough to contain the jack.
The new stainless steel shuffle, which is half the size of its predecessor and smaller than an AA battery, can store up to 1,000 songs, and provides around 10 hours of music playback on a single battery charge. There are no buttons on the device itself – instead it is controlled by a button on the earphone cord, which enables users to play and pause songs, adjust the volume, flick through playlists, and hear track information.

The shuffle can ‘speak’ 14 different languages, including Czech, Dutch and Mandarin as well as English, and can automatically switch between providing battery or track information in English and pronouncing foreign song titles in the appropriate language.

Tickets will be in shot supply as the best conference tournament of them all finally tips off today, Tuesday March 10th, when the Big East power conference hits Madison Square Garden. Unlike a lot of conferences where only the top "so many" teams gain entry, all 16 teams get to participate for a chance to gain automatic entry into the NCAA Tournament field. Pittsburgh usually performs well in this tournament and defeated Georgetown in the championship game a season ago with Sam Young taking home MVP honors. Paul McCartney Tickets

For the first time since the 2002 memorial concert for George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will appear together at the April 4th "Change Begins Within" benefit concert to be held at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. The two surviving Beatles are expected to play together at the event though how many tracks they will play is currently unknown. The benefit will raise awareness for transcendental meditation and raise funds to support organizer David Lynch's foundation that provides scholarships to students, parents and teachers around the world to learn to meditate. In addition to the two Beatles, Eddie Vedder, Donovan, Sheryl Crow, Ben Harper and Moby will appear.

Although the concert's most basic tickets - $1,250 (£885) passes for the concert and after-party – are already sold out, affluent patrons of meditation have other options. The best of these is a $100,000 (£71,000) package, which includes 13 front-row seats, backstage and rehearsal passes, and access to a celebratory Sunday brunch.

Tickets may still be found through eBay and Google
